Shin Hyun Phil and Ko Hee An's ‘Dear Mozart’ Jazz-Classical Crossover Project

Jazz's spontaneity added to genius

Top-tier jazz saxophonist Shin Hyun Phil and pianist Ko Hee An bring Mozart to life through jazz.

Their new album 'Dear Mozart' is the third work in their classical-jazz crossover project that began in 2019. Following their well-received previous works 'Dear Chopin' (2019) and 'Dear Schubert' (2022), they perform Mozart’s music, which sits at the pinnacle of classical music, reinterpreted in jazz style.

In 'Dear Mozart', Shin and Ko have carefully selected a total of 11 songs that convey the wide musical spectrum and diversity found throughout Mozart’s life. They have meticulously curated each track from selection to performance, reflecting the intricacy and elegance of Mozart’s music, which is both a pinnacle of classical music and familiar to the general public.

Particularly, they focus on vividly delivering Mozart's melodies using only two instruments, saxophone and piano. They boldly vary the tempo and scale and add improvisational elements to the complex and finely tuned pieces by Mozart.

'Dear Mozart' includes well-known masterpieces such as ‘Piano Sonata No.16’, ‘Piano Concerto No.23’, and ‘Violin Sonata No. 21 in E Minor’. It also features pieces like ‘Wiegenlied (Lullaby) K.350’, known as 'Lullaby', ‘12 Variations on 'Ah vous dirai-je, Maman' K.265’, also known as 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star', and ‘Turkish March’ from ‘Piano Sonata No.11 In A Major, K.331’.

Shin Hyun Phil and Ko Hee An, both alumni of Berklee College of Music, are prominent performers in the Korean jazz scene. Shin expands his career to being a music director for films and dramas, while Ko is active in various music projects like Prelude, Ko Hee An Trio, and the genre-crossing Ego Project with traditional Korean singer Lee Hee-moon.

To celebrate the release of 'Dear Mozart', Shin Hyun Phil and Ko Hee An will hold a concert at the Sejong Chamber Hall on May 6, 2024.
